How Does Sculptra® Work?
While the most popular and well-known dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, Sculptra® contains a different material called poly-L-lactic acid. This medical-grade material breaks down into ordinary lactic acid in the body over time. It signals the cells in the skin to start producing more collagen.
Because we lose collagen as we age, the natural fullness and firmness of our skin can start to fade. However, Sculptra® works in a unique way to restore more lost collagen and promote longer-lasting healthy collagen development. Collagen can smooth out lines and wrinkles, lift and reduce the appearance of scars, and make skin look and feel more firm and youthful.
Most typical dermal fillers use a material that immediately adds volume, but after a few months, the body begins to clear this material away. While poly-L-lactic acid may not stay in the body for several years, the collagen that it stimulates will continue to support and smooth the skin. Results begin to appear within a week or two and will continue to improve for several weeks, even after the last treatment.
How Long Does Sculptra® Last?
The results produced by Sculptra® will continue to support and improve the skin for anywhere from 18 months to three years, with the average being about two years. This means it lasts significantly longer than most hyaluronic acid fillers. To achieve maximum collagen production, most people will need three or four Sculptra® treatments, spaced a few weeks apart.

What Does Sculptra® Treat?
Sculptra® works to treat lines and wrinkles, especially nasolabial folds (the “smile line” creases that run from the corners of the nose to the mouth), lines around the mouth, and chin wrinkles. Sculptra® creates volume in these areas within a week or two, beginning to diminish the lines and wrinkles. Sculptra® has also been used to enhance volume in other parts of the face.
Is There Any Downtime With Sculptra®?
There is no downtime, and you can return to your regular activities after a treatment lasting about 20 minutes.
