If you’re looking for a way to resolve moderate to severe facial sagging, a facelift may be a great choice. Also known as a rhytidectomy, a facelift can restore a youthful appearance and help you look 5 to 10 years younger. If you’re considering facelift surgery, these tips can help you recover safely and efficiently so you can return to your normal life as soon as possible.
1. Eat Healthy
While you should always stick to a healthy diet, this is particularly important when you’re recovering from a facelift. Make sure you eat plenty of proteins, fruits, and veggies as they can lead to an easier and faster recovery.
2. Use Ice
During the first 24 hours, you will experience some bruising and swelling. Apply ice or cold compresses to your face as much as you can to reduce it for 24 hours, than switch to warmth.
3. Rest as Much as Possible
During the first few weeks after your surgery, try to rest and sleep as much as you can. Try to remove or limit distractions like a loud television or household chores. Remember, rest and sleep are two of the most important building blocks for healing.
4. Sleep with Your Head Elevated
When you sleep, your head should be at a 45 to 90-degree angle for two weeks. This way, you can quickly reduce swelling and free up space for optimal healing. Keep in mind that 45 degrees is the height of two pillows.

5. Keep Your Sutures Clean
You can expect Dr. Schalit to place sutures around your face to prevent infections. It’ll be your job to clean them. Dr. Schalit will provide detailed instructions on how to do this and encourage you to clean them daily after you shower until the redness and swelling subside.
6. Don’t Scratch Your Face
If your face is itchy, you’re likely on the right path to recovery. Do your best to avoid scratching your face as doing so can lead to uneven healing and remove brand new skin. Dr. Schalit can recommend special medications if you’re having a tough time resisting the urge to scratch.
7. Protect Yourself From the Sun
Your skin will be sensitive after facelift surgery so it’s a good idea to stay indoors as much as you can during recovery. If you must go outside, apply sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed sun hat.
8. Avoid Strenuous Exercise
For at least four to six weeks after facelift surgery, refrain from strenuous exercise. Wait until Dr. Schalit clears you for this type of physical activity. Light activity can be started about 2 weeks postoperatively.
