A facelift is a major surgical intervention that can generate dramatic anti-aging results. Because of this, it’s vital to prepare thoroughly before Dr. Schalit and the team begins the procedure.

In this post, we run through five tips for facelift preparation so that you get the best results possible.

*Individual results may vary.

1. Attend an In-Depth Consultation with an Expert Surgeon

The first step is to have an in-depth consultation with an expert surgeon. Speaking with Dr. Schalit provides an opportunity to discuss how you would like your complexion to improve.

He will take you through your options and the kinds of results you can expect. He will also talk to you about potential adjunct treatments you might want to combine with a facelift, such as dermal fillers or blepharoplasty.

During the conversation, Dr. Schalit will help create realistic expectations about the results you can achieve with a facelift, plus the preparation and recovery involved.

2. Have a Recovery Space Ready

It takes about two to four weeks to fully recover from a facelift. Bruising remains visible for approximately fourteen days, and sometimes longer, depending on your age.

It’s critical, therefore, to have a recovery space available. You need somewhere you can stay out of sunlight and keep your head propped up to help reduce swelling. Make sure this is ready for you before you undergo surgery, as you may not be able to prepare it afterward.

3. Refrain From Smoking and Drinking

Both drinking and smoking and smoking are off-limits before a facelift. That’s because components, like nicotine, restrict blood flow and could interrupt the healing process.

4. Adjust Medications as Directed by Your Surgeon

Before surgery, Dr. Schalit will delve into your medical history and advise you on your current medications. Some medications could leave you vulnerable to excessive bleeding, creating a hazard during surgery. Thus, you may have to alter your regime prior to surgery.

Your over-the-counter medication and supplement use may also have to change. Patients should avoid taking herbal supplements, anti-inflammatory drugs, and aspirin before a facelift.

5. Review Your Post-Op Recovery Plan

The last stage is to review your post-op recovery plan. You need to make sure that you have all the pieces of the jigsaw in place before you undergo the procedure.

After surgery, for instance, you will need somebody to drive you home from the recovery room. You will not be able to drive yourself while the anesthetic wears off.

You’ll also need to make sure that all your prescriptions for pain medication are filled. Doing this will help reduce the pain you experience during recovery.

Am I a Candidate for Facelift Surgery?

Good candidates for facelift surgery include patients with:

  • Cheeks that droop around the jawline
  • Deep wrinkles around the eyes, nose, and chin
  • Sagging skin
  • Corners of the mouth that sag

Ideally, you should be a healthy individual with no conditions that could impair healing. You should also be a non-smoker and have realistic expectations of what a facelift can achieve.
